Last year we decided to fulfill a request from ABCD Tanzania to provide all 10 schools with a traditional drum set. These are locally made and include a variety of drums, cymbals, and sticks.
The case was made to us that it would make life at school more fun and attractive for students used to rote learning in a classroom all day. Drums and celebrations are a big part of the culture here.
The drums arrived and we saw, and heard, the results on this trip! We were told by school officials that school assemblies, marches and celebrations are much enhanced by the drums, and even that attendance has improved.
At one school, theatre was also blended with the drums to tell a chagga tribal story. At last, the arts have arrived in the schools we are supporting!!!!
