We really enjoyed hiking through the trails to the children’s homes and being warmly welcomed with a loud Karibuni! (welcome). After much hand-shaking and laughter, we sit down to talk to the family about the child’s life in the past year: the dream, health, uniform and other needs, progress in school, favourite subjects. We take photos, give out any letters or cards from Canada sent by Canadian school children or supporters, and confirm the invitation to Art Day. Sometimes we get a gift of an avocado, or a banana.
Joseph and Lusia’s mom uncovered her store of bananas to give us a couple of warm, sweet ones. They were piled up on the ground and covered by many layers of old clothing and big leaves: ripening? and/or protected from animals?
